An outstanding smile depends on making sure that any risks you are taking are minimized with effective countermeasures. If for any reason you’re eating foods and consuming drinks that could potentially do damage to your teeth, you will have to have a cleaning system in place to ensure that your mouth is kept free and clear of debris that could potentially develop. One of the biggest risks that an individual is faced with due to their diet is called dental erosion, which occurs when acids chew through the enamel on your teeth.

As your tooth enamel is such a fine product and can easily be damaged, it’s important to make sure that you understand the causes and treatments to help combat any damage to it. For example, several risk factors for dental erosion include acid reflux disease, dry mouth, environmental factors, genetic predispositions and the excessive consumption of harmful products. It’s important to realize that sugars and carbs can be converted into harmful acids in your mouth. Typically, this is due to plaque buildup. When acids come into contact with your tooth enamel, they can begin to chew through it.

Although not all products can be avoided, take the time to protect your smile by improving your oral hygiene. Make sure that you are always brushing and flossing every day. However, you shouldn’t brush your teeth after eating as your teeth may be extra sensitive and prone to dental abrasion. Instead, try using nonabrasive products such as mouthwash or chewing gum. Chewing gum is especially effective because it can help produce additional saliva, a substance known for washing away debris and harmful acids in your mouth.
